Why Handmade Soap Is Better

The Truth About Handmade Soap: Why It’s Worth the Switch

Did you know some store-bought soaps aren’t actually labeled as soap?

Yep! Next time you go shopping, try to find ‘soap’ on the label of some big brands bars. I bet you will find ‘beauty bar’ listed instead. Those bars cannot be labeled as soap because it does not meet the FDA definition of soap.

“Today there are very few true soaps on the market. Most body cleansers, both liquid and solid, are synthetic detergent products. Detergent cleansers are popular because they make suds easily in water and don’t form gummy deposits. Many of these detergent products are marketed as “soap” but are not true soap according to the regulatory definition of the word.”

The “beauty bars” on the market today contain synthetic detergents and surfactants instead of plant and animal fats and oils used in traditional cold-process soap. The cocktail of chemicals in “beauty bars” are used so big companies could mass produce large quantities cheaply

Chemical detergents and surfactants are so effective at cleaning that they can strip away your skin’s natural protective oils and disrupt your skin barrier, making it more susceptible to dryness and damage over time

Our skin is our biggest organ and is the first to absorb the ingredients in any personal care product. Wouldn’t you want those ingredients to be the best quality for you and your family?

Traditional cold process soap is made from the saponification of fats and oils when mixed with an alkali substance (lye or sodium hydroxide) to create soap and glycerin. Lye is dangerous in its pure form but the reaction of mixing with fat and oils neutralize the caustic properties, resulting in a safe and effective cleansing product.

A properly formulated soap recipes ensure that all the lye is completely converted into soap, leaving no residual lye in the final product after curing 4-6 weeks. This is why it is so important to follow a trusted recipe when making your own soap.
